The Complete Guide
Uke vs Seme
What these terms actually mean, where they come from, and why the binary is outdated.
What Do Uke and Seme Mean?
Seme (攻め) literally means “to attack” in Japanese. In BL (Boys’ Love) culture, the seme is typically the more dominant, pursuing, or assertive partner in a romantic relationship.
Uke (受け) means “to receive.” The uke is traditionally the more receptive, emotionally expressive, or gentle partner.
These terms originated in martial arts (specifically judo and kendo), where they describe the attacker and receiver of a technique. Manga and anime fandom adopted them to describe relationship dynamics in BL stories.
Beyond the Binary
The traditional uke/seme binary is a simplification. Real personality dynamics are far more nuanced. Someone might be dominant in decision-making but emotionally vulnerable. Another person might be outwardly gentle but have an iron will underneath.
That’s why our quiz measures 5 independent dimensions instead of a single scale:
- Dominance — How much you naturally take charge
- Nurturing — How much you prioritize caring for others
- Independence — How self-reliant you are in relationships
- Expressiveness — How openly you show your emotions
- Adaptability — How flexible you are with changing dynamics
The 10 Personality Types
Instead of just “uke” or “seme,” our quiz identifies 10 distinct personality archetypes across the full spectrum. From the protective Classic Seme to the unpredictable Chaotic Uke, from the independent Lone Wolf to the fluid True Switch, each type captures a unique combination of these 5 dimensions.
Common Misconceptions
“Uke = feminine, Seme = masculine”
Not true. These are personality dynamics, not gender expressions. A seme can be soft-spoken and gentle. An uke can be physically strong and outgoing.
“Your type is fixed”
Personality dynamics can shift with different partners, over time, or even day-to-day. The True Switch type exists precisely because some people genuinely don’t have a default mode.
“Height/appearance determines your type”
Absolutely not. Your BL personality type is about internal dynamics — how you think, feel, and act in relationships. Not how you look.
